Ephesia Grammata: A case of art plagiarism Beginning March 31, 2011 I began receiving the following e-mail from Mr. Neil Douglas Nash From: Neil Nash Hello, my request is as follows, Background, my wife has been asked to produce about a 70 page poetry book of approx 75 mm by 55mm ( very very approximately ) for a exhibition. Conundrum : the book is supposed to look like an antique. however it must have one sheet of non opaque paper followed by an opaque sheet, and so forth for a total of 70 odd pages. The theme is fairy tales/ magical/mystical history etc and the style preferred is celtic However, as it is a piece of invention.... it uses De Montes-Synders 7 chemical symbols frequently, therefore I would ideally like the title Ephesia Grammata in a deiGratia true type front or very similar ; all letters inlaid in gilt . I need the 7 chemical symbols on the back, they must be in a straight line but alignment is up to the size and aesthetics. I admire the leather in the style of your large medieval journal (recreation) and wish for this style to be used please The paper should be able to take a nib as the pages will eventually be filled via calligraphy and will also include illuminated first letters of the opaque pages (as these pages will be in anglo-saxon and middle english ( circa mix of 4th-10th century)) and the translucent pages will be overlaid showing a modern english translation of the below opaque pages. All pages obviously will be required to be unlined and of good quality. The book size needs to be smallish due to a size requirement specified by the gallery curator. I look forward to hearing 1)if it is possible and 2) a rough price please, Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. From: Edward Stansell Neil, The first thing we need to know is the date you need the book. We are always very busy. So while we would like to do this project, we may not be able to complete it in the time you allow. I don't see any difficulties in doing this project, other that its near miniature size. Small books are harder to work with than large ones. This becomes truer as the book becomes smaller. Making the book look antique is no problem whatever. We do that daily. Before asking additional questions and making an estimate, I will await your reply to the above. Best regards, Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. 931-676-3466 From: Neil Nash Dear Ed, Thanks for the prompt reply. The book would be required by Mid June if possible, Early July at the latest. I am after a rough price, if the project is possible( in the timeframe outlned). I understand the size issue but the curator will not budge, he wants it to look like a portable treasured book and I suppose a drawstring carry bag of some matching kind of material/hide would be appreciated, if possible. Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. From: Neil Nash Hello again Ed, Apologies if I seem to be nagging. I am hoping you have a chance to read this email on monday, It has been a few days and I would like to just know if the project I proposed is possible and has been accepted and also the rough time frame expected to allow completion? I say this as the timeframe is ever shortening and if I need to look elsewhere , then I need to persue options now, rather than later. I hope you understand. Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. From: Edward Stansell Neil, We can also do the bag. Our estimate for this project is $1,200.00 US. plus shipping. We require a deposit of $400.00 in advance. (international money order or wire transfer) As time is critical we would appreciate your reply as soon as possible. Best regards, Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. From: Neil Nash Dear Ed, Thanks for the prompt reply and it looks like we have a deal. There is one last thing for me to ask though. the book cannot have your trademark or logo etc on it , it must look authentic, however it obviously will be credited as your work in the literature associated with the exhibition and if you wish to put it on your picture web board etc that would be fine. I will provide the exhibitions it is used in as soon as I have the total listing, at the moment it will be in slovenia, china and new york usa. the no logo stipulation is all about keeping the illusion during the exhibition for the viewers etc... I hope this is ok. If it is ok then please send your preffered banking details and i will transfer the deposit asap. Can you accept deposit payment by visa? if so I will do it this afternoon. I am happy to pay in full up front if it will help. Any queries or issues please let me know. Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. From: Edward Stansell Neil, Paying in full up front would expedite things. I was advised by our bank to do a wire transfer because other methods will slow the project down. If your bank will contact us, we will give them the necessary information for the wire. RE The book: is the size you gave us approximate or exact? No problem with logo, etc. None will appear. We will begin the work immediately upon payment. Best regards, Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. 1-931-676-3466 The next e-mail contained our bank information so it has been omitted . Thanks Ed, I have asked the boss ( wife), The back page lettering could be reduced to a single character but it has to be the 7th symbol; evidently that is a symbol that combines all the others. I have attached it for clarity. I can not get to the bank tomorrow but will be able to do it the next day. This due to my working shifts in a hospital Emergency Department as a ED senior nurse, I cant get away during lunch etc..I have to remain within calling distance. Sorry for the delay. Seeing as this type of transaction may just not be a daily occurrence for the remote area here, I would prefer to go to the bank and ensure its done correctly first time. Hope this meets everyones needs Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. Hi Ed, After much discussion I have both the curator and the boss agreed to move up to around 150mm by 100mm ish plates and pages to suit, will this make thing easier? ...I dont think I will be able to get it any larger though....I am sleeping on the couch tonight! Kind regards, Neil Douglas Nash Postal Mr Neil Douglas Nash. Mount Isa, QLD, PO Box 2724. Australia, 4825. Telephone: 04 185 196 75 Email: neil.nash@yahoo.com Ita erat quando hic adveni. Neil, Is it possible that the size of the cover boards be 123mm x 83mm. And the pages be 115mm x 79mm This is slightly larger than shirt pocket size. Beside the aspect that anything smaller would be extremely difficult to work with, having done some calligraphy myself, I believe it would be a trial handling such a small book while doing the calligraphy. If the book is supposed to be "travel-size," I believe the size I suggested would be more practical to travel with. You mentioned having one the symbols back page. Did you mean the last page of the text or the back cover of the binding. I have attached a sketch of what I think is a good design for the binding. The text-block will be sewn onto raised cords that will be laced into the wooden cover boards. brown calfskin will be used as a cover material, and will be made to have a look of age about it. The spine will be sewn to the text-block at the head and foot with exposed, heavy weight linen thread. The corners and center panel will have brass applications with embossed (raised) centers. The brass-work, both front and back, will also have a patina so as to look old. There will be a clasp consisting of a leather strap attached to the back that will have a flat brass "hook" that will attach to a brass piece on the front cover. There will be a line around the perimeter of the front and back covers and around the brass escutcheon. These lines will be done in blind (no gold). The edge of the pages will be stained dark red. The pages will be of vegetable parchment that appears to be somewhat greenish with the overlay leaf of drawing vellum (veg.). In order to be period proper, I recommend as little lettering on the binding as possible. In ancient times, people owned very few books and therefore knew which book was which, of the few they had, so had no need for titles etc. Please respond as soon as you can, because preparations need to be made before the actual work is begun. Best regards, Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. 1 Attached files| 2.2MB 1. CelticBook.png Neil, You book is finished. We won't have the shipping cost until Monday, but I thought you would like to know as soon as it was ready. We will bill you through PayPal for the cost of handling, expedited shipping, insurance, and the $25.00 balance on the cost of the book. Please let us know when the book arrives. We like to know our books arrive safely and your feedback is also appreciated. Please be aware that the first few pages before the first vellum page are endpapers as are the last few. We just wanted to be sure that the calligraphy begins in the right place. You probably already know this, but just in case you might not have thought of it we thought is best to play it safe and mention it. Best regards, Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. We hope to hear of your satisfaction with the finished product. We are perfectionists, therefore we strive for perfection. Of course when one's efforts are to make a new book look as if its been crafted from centuries past, what does perfection look like? It has been crafted the same as it would have been...well, almost...considering how the gold tooling was done. And, if you don't think its aged quite enough you might rough it up a bit yourself. We have a hard time doing that ourselves. One of our daughters was set up in her own shop as a bookbinder for a while. And when a customer would ask for an aged look, she crumple the leather, put it on the floor and trampled it a bit to scuff it up. She never received a complaint. Just not our style. We like the "taken care of" look. You decide. Again, looking forward to your thoughts. Best regards, Sandy Stansell Craft Bookbinding Co. 931-676-3466 Neil, We're wondering if everything is okay on your end. Book arrived safely? Is as expected? We'd would enjoy seeing some of what you're putting inside the book, the calligraphy and letters, if you find the time. Best regards, Sandy & Ed Stansell Craft Bookbinding Company 931-676-3466 There were a number of e-mails not listed here because they were largely of no particular note. We never heard from Neil Nash after this last e-mail, nor did we hear from anyone connected with the project. We have asked that they keep their word and give me credit for the creation of the book but we have gotten no response. | Return Home | FAQ Page | Contact Us | Testimonials | Gallery | services | Our prices | Related Links | Affiliate Links | BOOK LOVE | What's It Worth? | Leather Binding: Caveat Emptor! | Ephesia Grammata | Books How to Relate to God | |
